Final Reflection

I feel like I really learned a lot throughout my time in this class. At first, I struggled with some of the mediums we used. I struggled with twine and I struggled to figure out how to update my website homepage.

However, I’m glad that I have experience using all these different mediums. I think that it was interesting to reflect on how each different project reflected my writing in a different way because of the medium that was used. I will keep this in mind moving forward when I am putting projects together and always remember to think about the medium I’m using and what aspects it conveys.

Although moving off campus was unexpected, I felt like this class stayed steady. I was never wondering what I was supposed to be doing and the website gave me access to all the information I needed to do my work and keep myself informed and updated.

I had a lot of fun doing the Artist Book project and the Social Net Art Project. The Artist Book project gave me the opportunity to see my poetry in a new way and to experiment with composition. The Social Net Art project gave me the opportunity to learn more about Instagram and social media and to experiment with juxtaposition.

My final project was an expansion on the Social Net Art project. I think this helped develop aspects of my writing including, composition, juxtaposition, a well as experimentation. Putting posts together as well as choosing emojis and hashtags was a great way to explore and aspect of writing that I had not really considered before. It also gave me an deeper appreciation for social media influencers and people who produce content.

Final Project Progress

For my final project I chose to expand on my social net art project with Instagram. I wanted my page to look more like a complete/active profile. I have been posting at least once a day as well as adding hashtags to try to expand my audience for the posts. I’ve definitely noticed a difference when I use more hashtags and when I post early in the day between 10 and noon.

I also started taking pictures outside to add more variety to the page.

Final Project

For my final project, I would like to further develop my social net art project.

For this project I used Instagram to post pictures with unlikely captions. I really liked this project and I had a lot of fun with it. I would like to further develop my page and try to find new ways to establish a following/promote the page. I would also like the page to look more complete and developed like the Alan Bigelow’s Instagram page. I would also like to stick to more of a schedule and post regularly. Before, I posted a little sporadically.

I would also like to do some research about Instagram as a platform and learn more about how to promote pages as well as creating content and what that means regarding a page’s success.

Artist Book Reflection

For my artist book I chose to create a book that focused on poetry. I chose to make a mini book because I felt that it best captured the aesthetic that I was going for. I titled the book “Flutter” and stamped an image of a butterfly on the front. I used floral patterned paper to correspond with the feeling of the poems and create an overall feeling of softness. The pattern of the pages as well as the way the lines are pasted on each page contribute to the feeling of each poem and reinforce the theme. I always feel inspired by nature because of its resilience and I feel that the poems I chose to include in this book reflect a kind of resilience in moving through life and relationships.

I was really happy with the overall aesthetic of the book. It has been a long time since I have worked with stamps so the cover took quite a few tries. By the end of it I was very happy with the final piece. I would have liked to include small sketches of images that reflected the theme of each poem on the pages. However, it turns out I’m not very good at sketching and I felt that extra images would compete with the patterned paper which I really wanted to shine through and be the star.

I traced and cut each individual page out. They turned out pretty uneven which I’m not super excited about. But, I do think it contributes to the “hand-made” quality. Some of the lines are also a little haphazard and uneven. I feel that on some of the pages that worked and on some others it really didn’t.

Overall, I had a lot of fun putting this project together and it was really cool to see it all come together in a physical form.

Mini Project Ideas

For this mini project I would like to make an artist’s book. I would either like to do one that focuses on poetry or one that focuses on a short story. My mom used to be an avid scrapbooker, so she has an incredible amount of craft supplies that I am very excited to get into.

For the poetry book, I would use stamps to create the cover art and patterned paper to make the pages. I’d like to focus on a nature theme. I’d like to use floral patterned paper and butterfly/floral stamps. I plan to print the poems out and cut out the lines and arrange them accordingly on the page. I am thinking of binding the book with rings, with stitches, or with glue. I would also like to use stickers and other textured paper or cardstock to reinforce the look and feel of the whole book. I will also use stamps to create page numbers. I would like this book to be smaller and square shaped kind of like a mini book. I decided I would call the poetry book “Flutter.” Most of the poems I write are about relationships and I think that relationships are a big part of life and living things flutter. Butterflies flutter, eyelids flutter, hearts flutter.

For the short story book, I would also use stamps to create the cover art. I would also use images from old magazines to contribute to the story. I would also type lines out and arrange them around the images on the page. I would like the short story to be a mystery and have the wording look kind of like a ransom note style lettering. I would like this book to be bigger to support more images and clippings. I’d also like to use stickers in this book as well. I would want this book to have a darker aesthetic and I would also use stamps to create page numbers and create ink stain effects.

Artists Book

I looked at Action is Addiction as well as Long Slow March. I think these books looked really interesting in the way they used words and images on the pages to convey a strong message. They still have the same kind of “book” quality about them where there are paragraphs on a page, but they also show creativity and innovation with the juxtaposition of words and images. I think this is especially is with Action is Addiction. The black and white images create an overall aesthetic and tone that reinforce what the words are saying. How the images are placed on the page also draws the reader’s attention and reinforces the message. The images in Long Slow March are also reflective of the tone and aesthetic of the book.

Podcasts

I think that what makes Night Vale literary is the descriptive storytelling and overall narrative quality of the podcast. It really drew me in as a listener just like a good book would draw me in as a reader.

What I think is really cool about podcasts is the use of sound. I think that in Night Vale the background sounds really help to create the suspense in the story. The sounds also work descriptively, to give the listener a better “picture” or sense of what is going on.

For example the sound that I could hear when the speaker mentioned the dark planet was subtle and layered behind the speakers voice. It created an ominous feeling and gave me a better idea of what the scene would actually look and feel like.

There is a also a heart beat sound when the main character in the podcast gets nervous and afraid towards the end of the episode. I thought this sound also helped to create the suspenseful effect as well as engage the listener.

Social Media Project Progress Update

For my social media project I chose to use Instagram as a platform to explore juxtaposition. My goal was to pair pictures and captions that are completely opposite of one another. My user name is thecaskofbarefootmascato. I chose this as a user name because I thought it captured the essence of what I was going for and it’s silly. I liked the reference to The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allen Poe, it is linked to the images I’ve posted. They are kind of creepy looking pictures I’ve taken of my basement.

I’ve also used Instagram to edit the pictures to make them look darker and stranger to add to the overall aesthetic of the page. The captions I used are anonymous cliche “inspirational” type quotes. My icon is a cartoon butterfly that emulates the feel of the captions but not the pictures. My goal was for some humor to come across in the posts. I’m not sure if I really achieved that. Some of them might just seem confusing and not create any kind of feeling at all for the viewer. So far, I have about 8 or so followers.

I will continue to post throughout the week and check to see whether or not I have gained any new followers or if there is any kind of activity on the page such as likes and comments. I think one post or maybe two a day, moving forward is appropriate. I have also been thinking of adding hashtags to my captions as well, to try and widen the scope of my audience for this project.
